About the Teacher Development Initiative

The Teacher Development Initiative of ACCLAIM focuses on building capacity of practicing middle school and high school mathematics teachers, along with preservice middle school and high school mathematics teachers and post-secondary faculty involved with mathematics teacher preparation.  This initiative provides opportunities for cooperation and collaboration among all these groups, and it also aids higher education institutions in their efforts to provide quality mathematics teacher preparation for future mathematics teachers.

The Teacher Development Initiative sponsors two conferences per year: one for faculty interested in mathematics teacher preparation, and the other for preservice mathematics teachers.  These conferences have led to the establishment of a professional organization called the Appalachian Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators.  The initiative also supports mathematics professional development teams located in middle and high schools throughout Appalachia.  In addition, it is developing undergraduate courses that would be available online for preservice mathematics teachers in the region.
